LECCESE STONE
The Leccese Stone from the Miocene era up to now

The origins of Leccese Stone date back to the Miocene Era. This ancient stone is a million-years old limestone, rich in fossil remains such as intact plankton. The petrographic analysis reveals that the Leccese Stone contains mostly calcareous granules (calcium carbonate CaCO3), microfossils, splinters of deep-sea fauna and calcite cement dating back to six million years ago.

The presence of quartz, glauconite and feldspath granules can make the stone either tougher or more ductile.

There are different typologies of Leccese stone depending on colour (it can vary from white to light yellow), granulometry, compactness and age.

The versatility of the Leccese stone is due to these different characteristics.
